About

Teens of Color Abroad (TOCA) is a nonprofit dedicated to offering students of color immersive global language learning and cultural exchange opportunities. The organization accomplishes this through three distinct programs: Passport Pathways, TOCA Online, and a high school study abroad program that takes students abroad for two weeks.

TOCA was founded by Brooklyn-based educator Lamar Shambley in 2018, with the aim to disrupt the racial disparity in language learning and study abroad opportunities.

Since it’s inception, the organization has sponsored new passports for 30 students, served over 1,000 youth across the U.S., and provided more than $300,000 in scholarships.

TOCA believes that representation in global spaces matters. We know travel offers more than just a chance to see new places—it fosters personal growth, builds confidence, and develops leadership skills. By helping students access these experiences, we’re shaping future leaders who can navigate the world with cultural empathy and bold vision. When asked why we do this, the answer is simply…

Because they deserve the world, too.
